    A state-of-the-art review on torque distribution strategies aimed at enhancing energy efficiency for fully electric vehicles with independently actuated drivetrains

However, there are still several technological barriers that hinder the large scale adoption of electric vehicles. In particular, their limited autonomy motivates studies on methods for improving the energy efficiency of electric vehicles so as to make them more attractive to the market. This paper provides a concise review on the current state-of-the-art of torque distribution strategies aimed at enhancing energy efficiency for fully electric vehicles with independently actuated drivetrains (FEVIADs). Starting from the operating principles, which include the "control allocation" problem, the peculiarities of each proposed solution are illustrated. All the existing techniques are categorized based on a selection of parameters deemed relevant to provide a comprehensive overview and understanding of the topic. Finally, future concerns and research perspectives for FEVIAD are discussed

    Testosterone Replacement Therapy: Long-Term Safety and Efficacy.

    Recent position statements and guidelines have raised the distinction between a true and false, age-related hypogonadism (HG) or late-onset hypogonadism (LOH). The former is the consequence of congenital or acquired “organic” damage of the brain centers or of the testis. The latter is mainly secondary to age-related comorbidities and does not require testosterone (T) therapy (TTh). In addition, concerns related to cardiovascular (CV) safety have further increased the scepticism related to TTh. In this paper, we reviewed the available evidence supporting the efficacy of TTh in non-organic HG and its long term safety. A large amount of evidence has documented that sexual symptoms are the most specific correlates of T deficiency. TTh is able to improve all aspects of sexual function independent of the pathogenetic origin of the disease supporting the scientific demonstration that LOH does exist according to an “ex-juvantibus” criterion. Although the presence of metabolic derangements could mitigate the efficacy of TTh on erectile dysfunction, the positive effect of TTh on body composition and insulin sensitivity might counterbalance the lower efficacy. CV safety concerns related to TTh are essentially based on a limited number of observational and randomized controlled trials which present important methodological flaws. When HG is properly diagnosed and TTh correctly performed no CV and prostate risk have been documented

    3D surface acquisition systems and their applications to facial anatomy : let’s make a point

    In the last decades 3D optical devices have gained a primary role in facial anthropometry, where they find several applications from the anatomical research to clinics and surgery. With time the number of articles focusing on 3D surface analysis has raised, as well as validation studies which aim at verifying the reliability of different devices and methods of acquisition in comparison with other methods or direct anthropometry. This review aims at making a point in the field of 3D surface acquisition systems, describing the most used types of available devices and comparing the relevant outcomes in acquiring 3D facial models. Results show that currently stereophotogrammetric devices represent the gold standard, further improved by the diffusion of portable models. Caution should be given to the use of low-cost devices, more and more frequently described by literature, as often they do not meet the basic criteria for being applied to the anatomical study of face

    Long-term effects of functional appliances in treated versus untreated patients with Class II malocclusion: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Objective To assess the cephalometric skeletal and soft-tissue of functional appliances in treated versus untreated Class II subjects in the long-term (primarily at the end of growth, secondarily at least 3 years after retention). Search methods Unrestricted electronic search of 24 databases and additional manual searches up to March 2018. Selection criteria Randomised and non-randomised controlled trials reporting on cephalometric skeletal and soft-tissue measurements of Class II patients (aged 16 years or under) treated with functional appliances, worn alone or in combination with multi-bracket therapy, compared to untreated Class II subjects. Data collection and analysis Mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated with the random-effects model. Data were analysed at 2 primary time points (above 18 years of age, at the end of growth according to the Cervical Vertebral Maturation method) and a secondary time point (at least 3 years after retention). The risk of bias and quality of evidence were assessed according to the ROBINS tool and GRADE system, respectively. Results Eight non-randomised studies published in 12 papers were included. Functional appliances produced a significant improvement of the maxillo-mandibular relationship, at almost all time points (Wits appraisal at the end of growth, MD -3.52 mm, 95% CI -5.11 to -1.93, P < 0.0001). The greatest increase in mandibular length was recorded in patients aged 18 years and above (Co-Gn, MD 3.20 mm, 95% CI 1.32 to 5.08, P = 0.0009), although the improvement of the mandibular projection was negligible or not significant. The quality of evidence was \u2018very low\u2019 for most of the outcomes at both primary time points. Conclusions Functional appliances may be effective in correcting skeletal Class II malocclusion in the long-term, however the quality of the evidence was very low and the clinical significance was limited

    Thermally-induced lactosylation of whey proteins: Identification and synthesis of lactosylated β-lactoglobulin epitope

    The high temperatures used in the production of milk may induce modifications in proteins structure. Due to occurrence of the Maillard reaction, lactose binds lysine residues in proteins, affecting the nutritional value. Milk is also an important source of allergenic proteins (i.e., caseins, β-lactoglobulin and α-lactalbumin). Thus, this modification may also affect the allergenicity of these proteins. Focusing on milk whey proteins, a screening on different Ultra High Temperatures (UHT) and pasteurized milk samples was performed to identify lactosylation sites, in particular in protein known epitopes, and to verify the correlation between lactosylation and the harshness of the treatment. Whey proteins were extracted from milk samples after caseins precipitations at pH 4.6 and, after chymotryptic and tryptic in solution digestion, peptides were analysed by UPLC-MS and LTQ-Orbitrap. Results show the presence of lactosylated lysine residues in several known epitopes. Then, a β-lactoglobulin epitope was selected and synthesized by solid phase synthesis followed by in solution lactosylation, obtaining high reaction yields and purities. The synthesis of lactosylated allergenic epitopes, described here for the first time, is a useful tool for further studies on the technological impacts on food allergenicity

    Stair ascent and descent in assessing donor site morbidity following osteocutaneous free fibula transfer : a preliminary study

    Purpose: We wanted to investigate the gait kinematic parameters during stairs ascent and descent after a fibula free flap (FFF) removal for facial reconstruction. Methods: Eight patients who underwent facial reconstruction with FFF ascended and descended three standard steps. Their movements were recorded by a motion analyzer; gait kinematic parameters were obtained and compared to those calculated in eight control subjects. Results: Stride time, percentage of swing and support phases did not differ among healthy or operated limb, and control subjects (Kruskal Wallis, p>0.05). No significant differences were found for hip and knee movements, pelvis rotation and tilt, and body center of mass displacements. During stair descent, the patients had a significantly larger pelvis inclination than the control subjects (p<0.05). Conclusion: No functional limitations during stair performance were found. The only significant difference could indicate a minor control of the pelvis, and should be used to define specific rehabilitative interventions

    In 1953, Ter-Mikaelian predicted that the bremsstrahlung of low energy photons in a medium is suppressed because of interactions between the produced photon and the electrons in the medium. This suppression occurs because the emission takes place over on a long distance scale, allowing for destructive interference between different instantaneous photon emission amplitudes. We present here measurements of bremsstrahlung cross sections of 200 keV to 20 MeV photons produced by 8 and 25 GeV electrons in carbon and gold targets. Our data shows that dielectric suppression occurs at the predicted level, reducing the cross section up to 75 percent in our data.Comment: 11 pages, format is postscript file, gzip-ed, uuencode-e
